Students should be able to:
• Describe the ethical, legal and professional implications of the care of patients with mental illness
• Assess the ethical implications of a diagnosis of mental illness for the patient and those close to them, and the social and cultural influences on mental health diagnosis
• Identify the key components of mental health law and discuss the justifications used for compulsory detention, restraint and treatment
• Distinguish between the appropriate use of mental capacity law and mental health law in medical practice.
