Children and young people

Students should be able to:
• Demonstrate the ability to respect the rights and interests of children and young people

• Describe the law relating to the capacity of children and young people to consent to and refuse treatment, and analyse the ethical implications of this

• Outline the duty of confidentiality in relation to children and young people, and analyse the ethical implications

• Explain the respective roles of parents/guardians, HCPs and the courts in best interest decisions about the treatment of children and young people

• Assess the ethical and legal issues arising from safeguarding, including the impact of cultural practices on a child’s health.
