Elective Bursary Report- A placement with the Medical Humanities journal
A placement with the Medical Humanities journal offers a unique and invaluable opportunity to gain direct experience of the editorial and publishing processes within an international academic journal - Natalie Wheelhouse
A placement with the Medical Humanities journal offers a unique and invaluable opportunity to gain direct experience of the editorial and publishing processes within an international academic journal.
During my placement with the Medical Humanities journal, I joined the editorial team and gained hands-on experience in manuscript screening, peer-review administration, and copy-editing, whilst deepening my understanding of how humanities perspectives shape medical research, education, and clinical practice. Alongside the editorial work, I was also encouraged to develop my own academic writing – supported with thoughtful guidance and feedback from my supervisors – which I found particularly rewarding.
Collaborating with experienced editors, authors, and publishers gave me a more nuanced insight into academic publishing, as well as a greater appreciation of the wide range of inspiring career pathways within this highly interdisciplinary field.
Through this placement, I have strengthened my skills in critical analysis, academic writing, and increased my confidence working with scholarly material. It also provided valuable exposure to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of medicine, ethics, history, and culture.
Overall, I found this placement to be an exceptionally rewarding experience and would strongly encourage other students interested in academic publishing, interdisciplinary research, or the medical humanities to apply
