UKCEN’s 2024 Conference enables delegates to learn about and engage with key ethical issues in genomics. Leaders in the field will present on current and emerging issues for patients and professionals. The conference is relevant to the practice of genomics specialists, to laboratory scientists, lawyers and policy makers, and especially to health professionals in other fields and those involved in providing clinical ethics support who will increasingly encounter the ethical issues that genomics will present to them and to patients.

Abstracts
Delegates may submit an abstract to present a poster at the conference. Please note that posters will be entirely virtual, i.e., hard copies will not be displayed on the day, but will be displayed on-line.
We welcome posters that are likely to be of interest to those attending the conference, i.e., members of clinical ethics services, clinicians and other health workers, lawyers, and patients and those close to them.
Abstracts may be submitted until Monday 27 May 2024. Successful applicants will be notified within approx. 3 days. Successful applicants may then provide their poster as a PDF (further information will be sent to successful applicants).

Unless you qualify for a free place or bursary support (see below), fees are set at individual rates, as follows:
Full Rate – £145
Concessionary Rate* £105
Student Rate – £60
NB Clinical Ethics Committees that have paid their 2023-24 UKCEN subscription are eligible for a free place.
* The concessionary rate applies to nurses and allied health professionals, lay members of Clinical Ethics Committees, and members of the Institute of Medical Ethics (IME).
What funding is available to support attendance?
Support is also available to cover the costs of attending this conference:
Clinical Ethics Committees that have paid their UKCEN subscription for 2023-24 are eligible for one free place at the conference
UKCEN bursaries: A limited number of bursaries are available from UKCEN to cover registration fee and travel/accommodation up to a maximum value of £250 per applicant. These bursaries are available for: lay members of Clinical Ethics Committees; and nurses and allied health professionals who do not have access to study leave funds.Please email John Bridson (john.bridson@liverpoolft.nhs.uk) to request an application form. The closing date for applications is 13th May 2024. Applicants will be informed of the outcome within 21 days of their application being received.
Applicants IME student bursaries: Students can apply to the Institute of Medical Ethics (IME) for funding to support their attendance at the conference. Information on how to apply can be found here.
If your Clinical Ethics Committee is currently a paid-up subscribing member of UKCEN, you are entitled to one free conference place. If you are entitled to a free place: (1) please register, at the bottom of this page; (2) once you have completed the registration process, you will be transferred to the Sagepay page where payment would ordinarily be taken – please close down your browser at this point; (3) all registration information will be retained. Please note that you will not receive an automatic response to your booking, but we will check the information is correct and confirm your booking/details in due course.

“Legal Advice and Clinical Ethics – Better Together?”

UKCEN’s 2024 pre-conference workshop will be facilitated by Nichola Halpin and Ben Troke, both Partners at Weightmans Solicitors who have extensive experience in the healthcare sector and as members of NHS Clinical Ethics Committees. Nichola and Ben will present an update on law and medical treatment decisions, and developments in NHS in-house law. Delegates will have an opportunity to consider what opportunities there may be for collaboration between law and ethics to promote progress towards establishing consistently available clinical ethics support in the NHS.
