A fair exchange: why living kidney donors in England should be financially compensated

Presentation summary: In this presentation, we outline the scale of the kidney shortage problem and highlight the insufficiency of the current approaches to address this growing deficit. We then outline our case in support of financially compensating kidney donors in England. We argue that a monopsony system approach could increase the number of available kidneys and would reflect a fairer approach to the burdens and risks a living donor accepts.

Bonnie Venter
Bonnie is Lead Qualitative Researcher on a NIHR-funded project exploring the experiences and management of transplant failure at the University of Bristol Medical School. She is also a final-year PhD student at the University of Bristol Law School.

Daniel Rodger
Daniel is a Senior Lecturer in Operating Department Practice at London South Bank University and a second-year PhD student in Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London.
