Bioethics and the Media – Postgraduate Workshop

Applications are now open for this workshop

Zoom

Academic endeavours are highly valuable, yet not the only – and perhaps not even the greatest – way to generate impact and communicate your ideas. Another way to increase the scope of your research is by taking part in media performances. Although many bioethicists engage in such activities, postgraduate bioethics students generally receive no training on how to do this, and the responsibilities of bioethicists in this regard are not often discussed. This workshop will address these issues in an in-depth manner and with a practical focus. It will be led by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics’ communications expert Sarah Walker-Robson.

The workshop will kick off with a comprehensive presentation on the tips and tricks for media engagement. Then, participants will get to practice their own skills and learn how to present their own research in the media in a clear and concise way.

The workshop will address questions such as:

  • What should be the role and responsibilities of bioethicists in the media?
  • What is a good platform to spread your message, and what is a good moment in your research?
  • How do you formulate and stick to your key messages?
  • What are the do’s and don’ts when being interviewed by a journalist?
  • How do you deal with tough, unexpected questions?

The workshop will take place on online via Zoom on Wednesday 3rd May 2023 from 10.00-12.00 GMT.

APPLICATIONS

The deadline for applications is 14th April 2023, 17.00 GMT.
To apply, please complete the application form at the bottom of this page.

During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to participate in a practice interview about your research, using the techniques and advice that will be discussed in the first part of the workshop. The applications form asks for provisional answers to the following questions so that the interview can be tailored to your research upon successful application:

  1. What topical news item or science/health development could your research be applied to? (In case you cannot link your research to an historical news item, you can also come up with a hypothetical scenario that could happen in the future).
  2. Based on your answer to the previous question, what are the three key messages that you would want to get across if you were in a media interview on this issue?

If you have any issues, please feel free to get in touch https://www.postgradbioethics.com/contact

Sorry, the deadline has now passed for submissions.
