‘As part of their intercalating year, Bioethics students at the University of Bristol organise and lead a conference each year, inviting guests to speak on an interesting theme. The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Ethical Perspectives on Distributive Justice’ We chose it because of the increasing public awareness of the increasing cost of healthcare with an aging population and the measurable impact of (controversially termed) lifestyle choices such as obesity and smoking. It has been suggested that health care rationing, possibly punishing those whose ‘choices’ have made them ill, should be introduced to the National Health Service. We were keen to investigate this idea and thought it would make for interesting discussion at the conference’.

Grainne Reihill: ‘The possibility and ethical implications of offering oocyte freezing as a standard treatment of infertility in the UK’

This research study is a qualitative study that aims to explore oocyte freezing in the UK focusing on the process, the reasons for oocyte freezing and the possible ethical implications of oocyte freezing through examining the opinions of women in the UK and through analysing the current literature.

Anna Charles: ‘Should prisoners be able to participate as research subjects in medical research?’

I will be spending my elective at the National Research Ethics Service, where I will undertake a project studying the inclusion of prisoners in medical research. The project will include conceptual analysis of ethical arguments for the inclusion of prisoners in research.

Lindsey Rowley: ‘A Reflection on the Ethical Dilemmas Faced in the Treatment of Pre-term Neonates’

In my elective project I aim to look at the ethical problems faced by doctors and other staff when making decisions surrounding neonates, particularly looking at end of life decisions.

Amrita Sandhu and Amit Anand (Joint Award Winners): ‘Medical Students’ Attitudes to Patient-Centredness in Canada and the UK’

Patient-centredness is recognised as central to the delivery of high quality medical care and medical education. Studies of medical students’ patient-centred attitudes conducted across the globe show that doctor-centred approaches and paternalistic values still exert a large influence during medical education. The primary aim of this study is to quantify and compare patient-centred attitudes of final year medical students in Canada and the UK, the two countries in which the concept of patient-centred care originated.

Laura says: “The Lancaster University and Hospital Seminar Series was the first of a number of activities planned to foster discussion around medical ethics matters. The Seminar Series was solely for staff working at the University and local Hospitals thereby offering an opportunity for staff to network with each other over a common matter in an informal social setting. The invited speakers also offered the opportunity to showcase the ‘work’ being done on the common matter at the University and Hospital, whilst the invited guest speaker helped to raise the profile and interest in the Seminar Series. The topics of the Seminars were discussed by those involved in establishing the Seminar Series (including ‘Organ Donation in the 21st Century’ and ‘End of Life Matters’)”.

Sarah says: “With thanks to the Institute of Ethics for funding, I was…able to attend and present at the UNESCO bioethics education conference in Tiberius, Israel.

I co-presented at this conference, with Dr Carwyn Rhys Hooper, on a project I have been a part of for over a year now. This project focuses on developing ethics based Virtual Patient cases for use within the medical school curriculum; this has been very successful and our cases have been requested for use by medical schools internationally. We were pleased to share our progress with the delegates in Tiberius”.
