Student Council 2025-26

The IME Student Council was formed in September 2014

It acts as a student “think tank”, feeding ideas to the IME Board of Trustees on medical school ethics curricula, IME student membership, and student activities. The future has much in store for this wing of the organisation, with its members excited about improving ethical awareness in their respective medical schools and growing as a group.

Meet the current team!

Saarah Chowdhury

Chair

Hi, I’m Saarah, a 4th year medical student at UCL. I’m really excited to be Chair this year and work with the team to bring you projects that help medical students explore the diverse and important field of medical ethics.

Abbie Premakumar

Secretary & Senior Social Media Lead

Zeinab Abdelrazik

Conference Lead

Hi, I’m Zeinab and I am a 4th year medical student at the University of Birmingham.
I’m excited to be joining the committee as a Conference Lead and to help shape this year’s event. The first book that drew me to medicine and ethics was L'An V de la Révolution Algérienne by Frantz Fanon, which reshaped how I think about power and practice in healthcare.

Daniel Pace

Conference Lead

Hi! My name is Dan. I’m a third-year graduate-entry medic and one of the conference co-leads for 2025/26. My interest in medical ethics stems from work on ethical healthcare research for individuals in the criminal justice system. This year, our conference theme is the ethics of healthcare for underserved populations. I’m really excited that we’ll be exploring prison-based healthcare, alongside several other important topics, at our conference. We’d love for you to join us on Saturday 7th February 2026!

Zamzam Abdi

Conference Lead

Hi, my name is Zamzam and I am a second year medical student at uob. I chose to join this society as I have a special interest in ethics surrounding medical tech!

Elliot Tidman

Senior Education Lead

Hi, I am Elliot and I am one of the new Senior Education Leads and am very excited to work with my lovely colleagues at IME to bring you some exciting new ideas!

I’m a final-year medic at the University of Birmingham and intercalated in Medical Humanities so I’m rather old!

Can’t wait to meet lots of fellow medics interested in ethics and to have lots of fun in the meantime!

Rebecca Miller

Senior Education Lead

Hiya, my name is Bex and I’m currently the senior education lead for the student IME. I am a fourth year medical student at the university of Bristol. After completing a Masters in medical ethics and law, I have a keen interest in ethical teaching medical students and can’t wait to develop this further in my role. Areas such as assisted dying and the determination of best interests are keen interests of mine, and I’m always up for some healthy debate :)

Lara Bassalian

Junior Education Lead

Hi! I’m Lara, a third-year medical student at Leeds. I’m really looking forward to be joining the IME committee as one of this year’s Junior Education Leads. It’s going to be a busy year full of exciting opportunities, so stay tuned!

Isabella Mugerwa

Junior Education Lead

Hi, I’m Isabella, a UCL medical student and a part of the IME Education Committee. I’m excited to help drive the initiative to centralise and embed medical ethics deeper into the curriculum.

Francesca Whitfield

Senior Research & Publishing Lead

Hi, I’m Fran, a final-year medical student at the University of Southampton and I am the Senior for Research and Publishing on the IME committee. Before medicine, I completed a degree in Classics, where I developed a strong interest in ethics and philosophy - interests that naturally brought me to medical ethics. I enjoy thinking about how ethical perspectives can inform clinical practice. Outside of medicine, I spend my time running, rowing, and, like most medical students, drinking copious amounts of coffee.

Eva Fox

Junior Research & Publishing Lead

Ahmed Elawad

Junior Research & Publishing Lead

Hi everyone, I’m Ahmed and I’m a 3rd year graduate medical student from Ulster University. I’m really looking forward to getting to know you all and working together in my role as Junior Research and Publishing Lead. I’m particularly interested in the rapidly changing landscape of medicine and how this evolving world intertwines with medical ethics, whether that involves the rise of AI in healthcare, new government policies, or the shifting expectations of modern clinical practice.

Shreya Kantamneni

Senior Social Media Lead

Hi, I am Shreya and I am a 2nd year UCL medical student. This year, I will be taking on board the role of junior social media lead. I am looking forward to collaborate with everyone on the team and I am excited to hare about all of the amazing events and projects that we are planning for the year ahead, on IME social media.

Divya Kothari

Junior Social Media Lead

Hi, I am Divya, a 5th year medical student at the University of Cambridge. I am really excited to be working on the team as the Junior Social Media lead! The field of medical ethics is an extremely interesting one, given that it is constantly evolving and yet ever so pertinent in the work that we do. Hence, I am really excited to be working with a whole group of people who are just as interested in the topic and have so many views and ideas that I can tap on!
