Medical Ethics Creative Arts (MECA) Prize

By Phil Greenwood · February 7, 2026

Ethics is integral to good medical practice. You are invited to communicate a transformative experience of being part of an ethical dilemma, consider a fascinating ethical topic of interest, or produce a piece of art concerning medical ethics that will move your audience. The choice is yours!

This prize will assess submissions received in any artistic form that is not an essay. Possible examples include poems, short stories, plays (all up to 1000 words), songs or other musical compositions, cartoons, drawings, paintings, sculptures or videos (of up to 250MB, 2.5 minutes or 50cm in size). Essentially students are left to decide the medium for themselves, but of course, the submission must relate clearly to an aspect of medical ethics. Entries should be accompanied by a clear written explanation (of 100 to 200 words) of the ethical issue being considered and how the student has used their chosen medium to reflect upon that issue. Students should declare that their submission is their own original piece of work. AI generated artwork is not allowed for this competition. We will also produce a certificate for the winners’ portfolios.

Prizes

Submissions will be judged anonymously by members of the Institute of Medical Ethics (IME) Education Committee. The top 3 candidates will be awarded a 1-year IME membership and a cash prize:

  • 1st place prize of £300
  • 2nd place prize of £200
  • 3rd place prize of £100
