Power and Privilege in Academia

Black and Brown in Bioethics (BBB) Network was started to create space and dialogue around race within the UK bioethics research community. Our mission is to achieve equity and social inclusion within the UK bioethics community by creating a network, policies, and practices that expand opportunities for community engagement, eliminate racial discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and health of all people of colour. We hope to achieve this by upholding and championing our key values: inclusivity, individuality, collaboration, courage, empathy, and equity.

The BBB inaugural webinar is on Zoom on 21^st March at 16.00 GMT and the theme of the webinar is “Power and Privilege in Academia” where we will explore the power imbalances and oppressive structures that unfortunately continue to pervade academia.

We will be joined by Professor Ilina Singh (Professor of Neuroscience and Society at the University of Oxford, England, and Co-Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Ethics and the Humanities) and Professor Keisha S. Ray (Assistant Professor of Bioethics and Medical Humanities at McGovern Medical School in Houston, Texas), who will reflect on their experiences of navigating academic culture within the UK and US respectively.
