Newborn Screening: what should be screened for and how?

A Progress Educational Trust event

In the UK, newborns are screened for only nine conditions using heel pricks and blood spots. This compares poorly with other high-income countries, where the number of conditions screened for often exceeds 20 or 30.

Patient groups and others have asked for new conditions to be added to the nine currently screened for, but this has not been done. There is an urgent debate to be had about what conditions are screened for, and how this is decided.

This event will give you an opportunity to hear experts discuss this issue and put your questions and comments to them.

If you are interested in the role early intervention could play, in improving outcomes for children affected by rare diseases, then this event is for you.

Speakers include:

• Professor Laurent Servais
• Dr Will Evans
• Nick Meade
